What supplements should I be taking if I have acne?
It is the skin condition that I have the most personal experience of as well, as I have suffered with acne since I was around 14. The main thing that I found when my acne got bad, was my lack of confidence.
Not feeling comfortable to take my makeup off in front of people, being afraid to exercise with my friends at the gym because I knew by skin would show. Not wearing my hair up because of how my skin looked, ducking every time someone took a photo and it went on and on. I am sure that lots of us know these feelings but as girls we have the barrier of makeup. I always used to feel for the boys in my year at school that also had bad skin, but couldn’t cover it up with foundation and concealer.
Therefore, when I became a skin therapist many years later, and I started treating boys of a similar age, who didn’t even want to apply moisturiser to their skin because it was girly however they were interested in taking supplements and medication, including Roaccutane and Accutane. These ‘skin medications’ are very very dangerous. In 2009 Roaccutane was removed from the US market due to its depressant qualities in teenagers however months later, it’s sister product Accutane was launched. All the teenagers bought it because it cleared up their skin however it was having such a detrimental affect to their bodies. In 2014 the UK Government stated the biggest threat to common disease was antibiotic resistance which was exactly what these medications where doing. I started to wonder if there was an alternative to these harsh medications that was kinder to the body and skin but still delivered results?
That was my light bulb moment! It I could find a supplement that really worked to clear up acne, then I could help to treat boys and girls without them having to apply loads of lotions and potions!
Here at Winslow Skincare we stock a range of supplements called the Advanced Nutrition Programme. They are a skin specific supplement brand that work with high quality ingredients to help feed your skin from the inside out. They are chemical free, gluten free, organic where possible and very natural. Hardly any of the supplements have any contra indications and they are safe for children. They are also tested and retested to ensure that they do deliver results for all clients.
This brand also stocks one particular product called Skin Accumax. This award-winning supplement has had so many amazing results, I challenge you to find one negative review online. It really does work! In this blog I’ll be looking at Skin Accumax as well as one other supplement which are the two, in my opinion, that really can clear up your acne, not only now, but prevent it from returning in the future as well.
Why does acne happen and what do supplements do to control it?
Acne occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. This oil (sebum) lubricates your hair and skin, however too much can clog your skin and cause breakouts. When you body produces an excess amount of sebum and skin cells the two can build up together to form a soft plug (whitehead and blackhead stage), creating an environment where bacteria can thrive (red, angry, sore, breakout stage).
Therefore, the causes of acne are excess skin cells and excess oil which then leads to bacteria.
Supplementation can help fix excess oil as well as control the skin cell production which is how they can clear up your acne.
What supplements should I take?
I would recommend two supplements for acne. Firstly, Skin Accumax (control oil and excess skin cells) and secondly, Skin Omegas (control redness and inflammation).
Skin Accumax – take 2 a day (if mild acne) take up to 4 a day (if severe acne)
- Reduces oil production
- Reduces skin cell production
- Calming, reduces redness
- Vitamin A
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
- DIM extract – from broccoli
Skin Omegas – take 2 a day
- Improves skin immunity
- Vitamin A
- Omega 3
- Omega 6
