Why you NEED to read this blog
In order to understand why some products are more active and others not, we need to understand the skin anatomy to see why some products work and others don’t. I know that this may not be the most exciting blog and probably most of you will get half way through and get bored but I am not going to lie, it’s not the most exciting subject, but if you really want to understand your skin and the way it functions then you need to be understanding this stuff! So go and grab your coffee (or tea in you’re English) and settle down for a read!
The first layer of the skin is the stratum corneum or the horny layer (bad name – I know, but it refers to the texture of it), this is actually already dead skin and makes up our epidermis. Often most cheap creams and cosmetics will treat this first and second layer of the skin, so they are effectively feeding dead skin, which is why they don’t often have long lasting effects. They will plump and hydrate the surface but every 28 days when these skin cells are sloughed off, the effects of the products will go with them. Not good.
The second layer of skin is the stratum granulosum or the granular layer (better name), this again is already dead and makes up the second part of the epidermis. Again, some products reach this layer and sing it from the roof tops – it’s not a big achievement, you are still feeding dead skin, just dead skin that’s been there a little longer. Again, not good.
The third layer of the skin is the stratum spinosum or the spiny layer which is the thickest layer of skin and cell turnover occurs here (around 24-28 days in a healthy skin). This is where Environ products exfoliate and treat. It’s the third and final layer of the epidermis. This layer of skin is LIVING and where you really need to be treating if you want results. Very good.
The forth layer is the stratum germinativum or the basal layer. This is an important layer of skin because it’s where everything is! Your collagen, elastin, melanocytes, everything! This is where Environ also treats and its part of the dermis, this is where you really need and want your products to be treating. Very, very good.
The fifth and final layer is the basement membrane the deepest layer of skin and still part of your dermis. This is where your supplements and Environ facials treat but no skincare products can get down here. It’s your anchor and if you have problems down in this layer, it means big problems for your skin! The main way that you want to be treating this layer of skin, is like I mentioned earlier, with supplements.
In summary you really need to be looking for products that treat the dermis rather than the epidermis (these are called cosmeceuticals) to see results and if you have serious skin concerns or you want to see dramatic results, you need to be feeding your fifth layer (basement membrane) with supplements or Environ facials to really see results. The brand of supplements I would personally recommend is the Advanced Nutrition Programme, I’ve personally worked and trained with this brand and just LOVE their supplements. If you’ve got ageing, dehydration or other skin concerns, I would go for Skin Complete and Omegas and if you have acne then I would go for the Skin Accumax and Omegas – power combo for anyone!
